Carmelo Buscema - Craftsman of Marranzanos

Carmelo Buscema is one the last craftsman of Marranzanos in Sicily. He lives and works at Monterosso Almo, near Ragusa.

In the era of globalisation and industrialised production processes which leave no space to craftwork and craftsman, Carmelo represents a last survivor of an ancient profession destined to disappear after him.

The pictures show the construction phases of the musical instrument invented during the 14th century and considered today one of the symbols of Sicily around the world.

A special thanks to Carmelo for his patience and for having accepted to realize this project.
